Growth factors are secreted proteins involved in cell-cell signaling pathways. Many growth factors are recognized by cell-surface bound growth factor receptors that initiate cascades of protein phosphorylation intracellularly. Other growth factors, such as the steroid hormones, diffuse into the cell and are bound by nuclear hormone receptors that bind to DNA directly and regulate gene expression.
