HOXA9 is required for normal hematopoiesis and contributes to myeloid blood cell differentiation. High levels of HOXA9 expression in hematopoietic cells is a characteristic feature of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and may contribute to the development of this disease. Overexpression of HOXA9 markedly expands hematopoietic stem cells.
