U-87 MG nuclear extract was prepared from cell cultures of the human glioblastoma-astrocytoma U-87 MG cell line. The U-87 MG cell line was derived from the tumor tissue of a stage III cancer patient. Glioblastoma multiforme is the most prevalent and most aggressive type of primary brain tumor in humans. Because glioblastoma tumors are highly refractory to many chemotherapeutic agents, glioblastoma has the worst prognosis of all malignancies of the Central Nervous System (CNS). The U-87 cell line is a Grade IV glioblastoma cell line that displays an epithelial-like morphology and, like glioblastoma tumor cells, are also refractory to most conventional cancer therapies. This cell line is commonly used in research as a model system to study the responsiveness of glioblastoma cells to cancer therapies.
