GATA-4 is involved in the development of several mesodermal and endodermal structures. GATA-4 mutant mice exhibit severe heart malformations. Defects in GATA-4 are the cause of atrial septal defect type 2. ASD2 is a congenital heart malformation characterized by incomplete closure of the wall between the atria resulting in blood flow from the left to the right atria. GATA-4 also plays a role in regulating gene expression in cardiac and smooth muscle cell types.
