Histone acetylation is an important post-translational modification that is involved in regulating genome compaction and gene expression. In general, the addition of acetyl groups to histones by HAT enzymes is correlated with an increase in gene expression, whereas removal of acetyl groups by HDACs is associated with transcriptional repression.
