Background
KLF4 (Kruppel-like factor 4) is a transcription factor that binds GC-rich DNA sequences having a consensus core DNA binding sequence of CACCC. It is a member of the Kruppel-like factor (KLF) family, highly expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, skin and other epithelial tissues. Krüppel-like factors are a family of zinc-finger transcription factors that play important roles in many fundamental biologic processes including development, proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. KLF4 can function both as an activator and repressor of transcription, depending on the gene targeted. Generally, KLF4 serves as a cell cycle regulator, and it may be a tumor suppressor. KLF4 also appears to function as an oncogene in some situations. Additionally, overexpression of KLF4 (along with Oct3/4, Sox2 and c-Myc) can transform mouse fibroblasts into a state resembling embryonic stem cells (ES cells), referred to as Induced Pluripotency.
